- Buy fewer items. We buy 400% more items today than in 1980-and we don't need to. It's not like 1980 was prehistory, and you really need 4 times as much clothing.
- If you buy fewer items, you can afford to spend more on each item. Some things you might really want/need, but think are too expensive, may not cost any more or even less than buying a larger number of cheap items.
- Look for clothing made locally, or at least in your own country. Countries that have labor laws and environmental protections such as the United States are going to have less negative impact on workers and the environment.
- Buy natural, biodegradable fiber clothing. Simply washing synthetics puts microplastics into the water eco system, eventually into the ocean. Polyester, just to name one synthetic, is virtually forever-it will never bio-degrade in a landfill.
- Take care of the clothing you have, so you don't need to replace it as often.
- Find uses for clothing you don't want, instead of throwing them in the trash. Obviously selling or giving them to someone who wants them is great, but even using them as a rag, instead of buying a microfiber cloth or something, or dropping them off at a place that recycles cloth is of course better than throwing them in the trash.
